The BOAR, HRDC’s 3rd Annual 1K & 5K Obstacle Course Race, Slated for August 26, 2023

This popular event returns to Bozeman to help raise financial support and awareness for HRDC’s Blueprint Continuum Program which works to ensure no young adult is confronted with the unthinkable obstacle of homelessness.

Bozeman – The BOAR, HRDC’s family-friendly, obstacle course adventure race with 1K and 5K options, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26th, at Glen Lake Rotary Park, formerly called the East Gallatin Recreation Area.

Participants may sign up to race individually or as part of a team and will enjoy a unique race day experience with multiple different obstacle challenges along the course that range from a slip-and-slide to a climbing wall. The 1K race is designed to be equitable for all skill levels and features full accessibility, while the 5K offers more athletic challenges throughout the course including a handful of new obstacles. All obstacles were constructed by HRDC staff and designed by MSU architecture students which was made possible through sponsorships and donations from community partners.

Proceeds from the race will directly support Blueprint, a program started by HRDC in 2015 to provide a safe and inclusive environment for teens and young adults between the ages of 16-24 who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.

In addition to safety and shelter, Blueprint provides a continuum of care and wrap-around supportive services including case management, rent assistance, and long-term housing. HRDC’s Blueprint program also places critical emphasis on educational attainment, employment, development of positive self-image, social competencies, development of healthy boundaries, choice, and conflict resolution skills.

To help raise awareness and funding for this essential community resource, Jeremy Alcoke, HRDC Blueprint Continuum Coordinator, worked with students from MSU’s School of Architecture and a host of volunteers to develop the race itself as well as a variety of obstacles for the course that would appeal to a broad range of abilities.

For Alcoke, The BOAR is more than just another race. “All of the obstacles represent some of the hurdles youth experiencing homelessness may face. We wanted to do something that would raise awareness of the critical need and the many challenges members of our community experience.”

Alcoke said that the race’s first two years have been a great success and went on to explain that those who raced left smiling while feeling accomplished from the obstacle challenges they conquered. “What makes The BOAR special is that it is truly a race for all, with obstacles that allow nearly anyone to participate. From parents pushing strollers, to racers who may have ambulatory difficulty, to racers with developmental disabilities, and to experienced racers seeking a challenge,” Alcoke explained. “This year’s running of The BOAR is guaranteed to be a lot of fun for all!”

Registration for The BOAR will remain open until 7:00 am on the day of the race. Merchandise will be available for purchase on the day of the race along with a variety of food options from HRDC’s Mighty Spork food truck.

More details about the race and a registration form can be found at runtheBOAR.com.

As a private, not-for-profit Community Action Organization focused on building a better community through its nearly 50 initiatives, HRDC combats poverty in southwestern Montana and believes everyone deserves the opportunity to be financially stable. Warriors & Quiet Waters Announces 5th Annual Warrior Taste Fest Celebration

Bozeman — Warriors & Quiet Waters Foundation will host its annual Warrior Taste Fest fundraiser — an event that will raise over $600,000 to support post-9/11 combat veterans.

Warrior Taste Fest, which will take place at Haynes Pavilion at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds, plans to host up to 1000 people on Friday, September 8 for tastings of food, beer, and cocktails from over 30 of Montana’s best restaurants, breweries, and distilleries. While guests eat and drink, they can enjoy the work of 12 renowned artists as they quick-finish paintings and sculptures that will be up for bid during the live auction.

Artists Matt McKenna, Whitney Hall, Jennifer Johnson, Rob Akey, Amber Blazina, Todd Connor, David Graham, Joe Kronenberg, Steve Lillegard, Amanda Markel, Greg Scheibel, and Shirle Wempner will all be quick finishing their art for the live auction.

“Recent data from the VA indicates that our veterans face a suicide rate 1.5 times higher than the general populace, with suicide being their second leading cause of death. Though combat is behind them, the battles veterans face persist – in some cases for their lifetime,” said Brian Gilman, CEO of Warriors & Quiet Waters. “By attending Warrior Taste Fest, you champion our mission to enable veterans to thrive. Together, we can fortify America with thriving veterans. Your active support goes beyond mere gratitude – it’s essential.”

The event will start at 5:30 p.m. for Early Entry ticket holders to meet the artists, hear live music, and more.  Doors open for General Admission ticket holders at 6 p.m. The live auction and programming will run until 9:45 p.m.

Tickets for Warrior Taste Fest are on sale now and more information can be found on Warriors & Quiet Waters’ website, wqwf.org. All proceeds will support post-9/11 combat veterans.

Bozeman City Commission Supports 155 Workforce Housing Units in Lumberyard Project

BOZEMAN
– The Bozeman City Commission voted unanimously on two actions to support 155 units of workforce housing in Bozeman. The Lumberyard project combines 155 units of workforce housing with 285 units of market-rate rentals in a mixed-income project. The workforce units will be restricted for at least 50 years at rents deemed affordable for households making 60% of the area median income (AMI) or $1,420 a month for a two-bedroom unit at today’s AMI.

The Bozeman City Commission voted to provide up to $7.5 million in reimbursement for eligible costs of public infrastructure using tax increment financing (TIF). With TIF, a developer finances all the cost of new public infrastructure that is necessary for a project and is reimbursed with new tax revenue generated by the project. The assistance makes projects feasible that would not be feasible but for TIF assistance – like workforce housing projects.

Bozeman’s City Commission also provided a $1 million grant to the newly created Gallatin Community Housing Impact Fund managed by NeighborWorks Montana (NWMT). The Fund will provide gap financing that makes workforce housing projects feasible throughout Gallatin County. The grant agreement requires that at least $1 million from the Fund must be invested in projects within the Bozeman city limits. NWMT provided a commitment letter to Reuter Walton Development for $2.5 million contingent on closing City and investor dollars into the fund. The gap financing from the Fund, combined with the commitment of TIF funds from the City will make the 155-unit workforce housing project feasible.

Bozeman-based Virga Capital is the developer of The Lumberyard project and is financing the public infrastructure and constructing the market-rate housing. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the City of Bozeman and Reuter Walton Development on delivering desperately needed workforce housing,” said Rob Lateiner, CEO of Virga Capital. “Without the City of Bozeman’s leadership in providing tax increment financing assistance, this project would not be possible.”

Reuter Walton Development is building the 155 units of rent-restricted workforce housing utilizing low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC). “The Gallatin Community Housing Impact Fund is making our 155-unit affordable housing project feasible,” said Nick Walton, founder, and CEO of Reuter Walton Development. “LIHTC is an underutilized source of funds in the Bozeman market because projects are often infeasible due to high construction costs. With the City’s seed investment in the Fund, we can pair federal and local resources to provide essential affordable housing for the Community.”

NeighborWorks Montana is managing the Gallatin Community Housing Impact Fund. Other committed investors in the Fund include First Security Bank, Stockman Bank, Opportunity Bank, American Bank, Bank of Bozeman, and Clearwater Credit Union.

Those seeking more information on the project can reach out to David Fine at dfine@bozeman.net.

Blackmore Mountain Trail

On August 18, 2023, at 10:00 am Gallatin County 911 was contacted regarding an injured trail runner on the Blackmore Mountain Trail. The runner had hyperextended their knee and had limited mobility and loss of feeling in their foot.

Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue volunteers from the Valley Section and Heli Team, as well as AMR medical personnel responded to the Blackmore Mountain Trailhead. Search and Rescue volunteers deployed a one wheeled litter up the trail to meet with the injured runner.  Volunteers located the patient about 5 miles up the trail where they assessed their injuries and assisted the runner in getting back to the trailhead.

Sheriff Springer would like to remind backcountry enthusiasts to be prepared when recreating in the backcountry. Having the ability to communicate with rescuers cuts down the amount of time it can take to get medical attention when things go bad.

High water temps prompt daily fishing restriction for lower Madison River

THREE FORKS – A daily fishing restriction will be in effect for the lower Madison River starting today, Aug. 16.

A hoot-owl restriction, which prohibits fishing between 2 p.m. and midnight, will be in place from the river’s confluence with the Jefferson River up to the Warm Springs Day Use Area. Water temperatures in this reach have exceeded 73 degrees for several consecutive days, meeting criteria for the fishing restriction.

Restrictions of this nature are designed to protect fish that become more susceptible to disease and mortality when stressful conditions combine, such as warm water temperatures, low flows and high angling pressure.

Anglers can help reduce stress and mortality for fish by following these practices when catching and releasing fish, though fish mortality may still occur:

  • Fish during the coolest times of the day where permitted.
  • Keep the fish in water as much as possible.
  • Let the fish recover while releasing it.
  • During times of high temperatures, consider fishing in areas with lower temperatures, such as larger lakes or reservoirs, or higher elevation waterbodies.

For the latest waterbody restrictions and closures, visit fwp.mt.gov/news/current-closures-restrictions/waterbody-closures.
