Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation grants $11.25 million toward Gallatin College MSU building

BOZEMAN – The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has made a grant of $11.25 million to Montana State University to help fund a first-ever, on-campus facility that will house the university’s fast-growing Gallatin College MSU. It is the foundation’s largest grant to date in Montana.

The grant covers half of the $22.5 million in private dollars MSU is raising for the Gallatin College MSU building. The 2023 Montana Legislature and Gov. Greg Gianforte required the university to raise funds to match $23.5 million in state dollars for the project, which will cost a total of $46 million.

“This is an amazing investment in the people of Montana by the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation,” said MSU President Waded Cruzado. “Generations of Montanans are going to have educational opportunities to prepare themselves for good jobs right here in their home state thanks to this gift.”

“We are thrilled to continue expanding our efforts in the beautiful, great state of Montana,” said Arthur M. Blank, chairman, Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. “There are many growing industries in the state that need skilled workers, and we hope this new building will increase accessibility for diverse students to high-quality training matched to job skill demand. We’re honored to support this growth, which will benefit not only students but will also strengthen businesses and industries across Montana.”

Gallatin College MSU has been the university’s fastest growing college for years and set an enrollment record last fall with 906 students. However, it has never had its own dedicated facility – the only such two-year college in the state without one. Its 22 programs offering professional workforce certificates and one- and two-year degrees are currently spread among a variety of leased and donated space around Bozeman.

Gallatin College MSU collaborates extensively with Montana industries and employers to develop responsive educational and training options that meet state workforce needs. Existing programs at Gallatin College fill quickly. Several popular programs regularly have waiting lists, and there is limited capacity to expand existing programs or to add new programs because of the lack of a dedicated facility.

In direct response to industry needs, Gallatin College MSU has added programs in photonics and laser technology, culinary arts, carpentry, aviation, CNC machining technology and robotic integration, HVAC, IT cybersecurity and information assurance, welding technology, and many more.

“Our vision for the future of Gallatin College MSU is far more than just a building. It is to change how Montanans receive workforce education in their home communities, in tandem with industry internships, and even while working on the job,” Cruzado said. “This gift from The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation will benefit Montanans in every corner of the state.”

In addition to this capital grant, in 2023 the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation granted $919,000 from its Youth Development portfolio to develop and pilot a new one-year Hospitality Management Certificate at Gallatin College MSU. The grant will support young people, including dual-enrolled high school students, seeking to enter the hospitality and leisure industry faster and will support the industry’s growing needs across the state. The program will be offered in person and online to ensure access for young people living in rural and Indigenous communities.

“We are incredibly honored to receive this investment in our students and Montana from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. This amazing gift will provide needed resources to assist our students in developing skilled trades that are in high demand throughout our Montana communities,” said Stephanie Gray, dean of Gallatin College MSU.

The university will continue its efforts to raise the other $11.25 million required to reach the state match.

Mallards Rest Fishing Access Site reopened

LIVINGSTON – Mallard’s Rest Fishing Access Site has reopened to visitors.

Erosion and destabilization of the entrance road from a historic flooding event on the Yellowstone River in 2022 made the road prone to collapse, and the site had been closed since then for public safety.

This summer, crews built a new entrance road and a new point of entry from Highway 89. Securing the extra space for the new road required Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks to negotiate a new lease on a parcel that had an existing lease through the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, which took time.

The new road has safety upgrades from the original entrance, including a more gradual slope and more direct access, eliminating a sharp curve from the original entrance. Reconstruction was completed Friday, allowing public access to resume.

The new section of road is about 950 feet long, moving the new point of entry north of the old entrance along Highway 89.

Mallard’s Rest is a beloved site for many recreationists on the Yellowstone River south of Livingston that offers river access, day use and camping opportunities. FWP staff appreciate the public’s patience while the department worked to restore and improve safe public access here.

Fishing restrictions to be lifted on some rivers in west-central and southwest Montana

HELENA – Recent cooler temperatures will allow hoot-owl fishing restrictions to be lifted Tuesday, Aug. 27, on sections of Bitterroot River, the Clark Fork River and Silver Bow Creek in west-central Montana, and a section of the Big Hole River in southwest Montana.

Bitterroot River: Restrictions lifted from Clark Fork River to Veteran’s Bridge.

Clark Fork River: Restritions lifted from the mouth of Rock Creek to its origin at the mouth of Warm Springs Creek.

Silver Bow Creek: Restrictions lifted for its entirety.

Big Hole River: Restrictions lifted from the Tony Schoonen Fishing Access Site (also know as Notch Bottom) to Maiden Rock FAS.

The restrictions were put in place earlier this summer. Hoot-owl restrictions are designed to protect fish that become more susceptible to disease and mortality when low flows and high water temperatures combine with other stressors, including catch-and-release fishing.

Anglers can reduce stress on fish at all times of the year by getting fish to the net or in hand quickly, keeping them in the water, and reviving them prior to releasing them back into the river.

Along with monitoring stream temperatures, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks also monitors stream flows, and in some streams, holds instream flow water rights. FWP’s water program can issue a call on junior water users, when appropriate, to contribute to stream flows through the late summer and early fall. For more information on FWP water rights, click here

Big Sky Resort drops tram charge on lift tickets

- Lift tickets include skier and scenic access to the Lone Peak Tram
- Ikon, Mountain Collective, and select season passes continue to use Autocharge

Big Sky – Starting in the 2024-25 season, all Big Sky Resort lift tickets will include access to the iconic Lone Peak Tram.

The change comes after tram access was decoupled from lift tickets and select season passes in the 2021-22 season in an effort to keep wait times under 30 minutes on average and preserve the ski and tram experience.

The new Lone Peak Tram, which debuted in December 2023, offers several efficiencies that allow more access to the tram, including increased cabin capacity and a dedicated scenic rider line. Nearly a quarter of guests riding the tram last season utilized the new scenic ride option.

“The new tram has exceeded expectations in every way. We promised we would reevaluate the tram experience each year, and this move provides flexibility and value with our product lineup, while offering more guests access to Lone Peak,” said Troy Nedved, the resort’s General Manager.

Ikon, Mountain Collective, and select Big Sky passholders will continue to utilize Autocharge to access the tram. Tram rides will continue to be offered at $10-40 per ride, with scenic access always offered at a lower rate than ski access.

Mountain Operations will continue to carefully manage the number of riders per tram to maintain a smooth flow and optimal guest experience whether it be skiing and riding off the peak or taking in the view across three states.

Early bird lift ticket pricing is available now. Daily rates start as low as $56 per day in December and April. Guests who purchase before September 10 can secure lift tickets at the lowest prices all season long.

How Nursing Homes Benefit from On-Demand RNs

The healthcare sector, especially within nursing homes, is experiencing a significant shift towards more adaptable staffing models to meet dynamic resident needs efficiently. The concept of on-demand nursing has emerged as a vital solution in this context. These flexible RN jobs allow facilities to manage staffing levels effectively, ensuring that resident care does not suffer due to unforeseen shortages or sudden increases in demand. This model not only addresses immediate needs but also helps in long-term strategic staffing, making it indispensable in modern healthcare settings.

Flexibility and Cost-Effectiveness of On-Demand RNs

Addressing Fluctuations in Resident Needs
The health and care requirements of residents can vary dramatically, often unexpectedly. The deployment of assisted living RN personnel provides a robust solution to these fluctuations. This staffing approach allows facilities to scale their workforce up or down based on real-time needs without compromising the quality of care. Such adaptability is crucial in managing the unpredictable nature of healthcare demands in elderly care facilities.

Managing Staff Availability and Unexpected Shortages
Unexpected staff shortages can disrupt the smooth operation of nursing homes, affecting resident care. Utilizing on-call nursing work allows for immediate response to such shortages, ensuring that resident care continues seamlessly. This strategy not only covers gaps in the schedule due to sudden staff absences but also helps in managing long-term leaves or vacations, maintaining a consistent level of care without the stress of rushed hiring processes.

Reducing Costs
Hiring per diem and part-time nurses proves to be a cost-effective strategy for nursing homes. By employing RNs only when needed, facilities can significantly reduce labor costs associated with full-time employment, such as benefits and overtime pay. By optimizing budget allocation and minimizing financial waste, this methodology enables funds to be reallocated into staff training and facility improvements, ultimately increasing total resident care.

Avoiding the Long-Term Commitment
The flexibility of hiring per diem nurses allows nursing homes to operate efficiently without the long-term financial and administrative commitments of full-time staff. This approach offers the advantage of evaluating nurse performance and fit within the team before making any long-term employment decisions. It also provides the management with the flexibility to adapt staffing levels to the current budget and care demands, optimizing both human and financial resources.

Enhancing Care Quality with On-Demand RNs

Bringing Expertise and Adaptability
These professionals are accustomed to adapting quickly to different care settings, making them highly effective in long-term care environments. Their broad skill set allows them to handle complex care scenarios more efficiently, ensuring that residents receive the best possible care tailored to their specific health needs.

Maintaining High Standards of Care
During peak periods, such as flu season or when there is a high incidence of resident admissions, on-demand nursing proves crucial in maintaining high care standards. By increasing staff numbers swiftly in response to higher needs, nursing homes can continue to deliver high-quality care without overburdening existing staff. As a result, the facility's stellar reputation is maintained and all residents receive prompt, high-quality treatment.

Leveraging Diverse Experience Across Various Facilities
Part-time nursing jobs are often found across multiple facilities and bring a wealth of knowledge and best practices from various healthcare environments. This exposure enables them to introduce innovative care techniques and perspectives that can improve overall care standards in nursing homes. Leveraging this diverse experience can enhance their care protocols and adapt more innovative practices that benefit both staff and residents.

Attracting Top Nursing Talent with Flexible RN Jobs

The Appeal of Adaptable Schedules
As emphasized before, flexible scheduling is a significant draw for skilled nurses considering per diem job opportunities. The ability to choose shifts that align with personal commitments and lifestyle preferences makes flexible RN jobs highly attractive. This flexibility not only aids in balancing work-life commitments but also reduces job burnout, attracting a more dynamic and dedicated workforce to nursing homes.

Building a Reliable Pool of On-Call Nursing Talent
Creating a reliable pool of on-call nursing talent involves several strategic steps that ensure nursing homes have access to skilled and motivated RNs ready to step in when needed:
1. Competitive Compensation: Offering attractive pay rates and possible bonuses for last-minute shifts can draw more nurses to on-call roles.
2. Streamlined Hiring Process: Simplifying the application and credentialing process makes it easier for nurses to join the on-call pool.
3. Regular Communication: Keeping nurses informed about available shifts and changes in scheduling ensures better preparedness and availability.
4.Professional Support and Development: Offering continuous training and professional growth opportunities retains nurses and enhances their job satisfaction.
Building a dependable pool of the best per diem RN roles is crucial. The process involves not only attracting nurses with competitive compensation and flexible scheduling but also retaining them through ongoing professional support.

Operational Efficiency and Strategic Use of On-Demand RNs

Supporting Permanent Staff

The integration of per diem nurse work helps alleviate the workload on permanent staff, thereby reducing burnout and improving job satisfaction. This support system allows permanent staff to focus more on providing quality care rather than dealing with the stress of understaffing. Furthermore, it promotes a more harmonious work environment where all team members feel valued and supported, contributing positively to the overall morale and efficiency of the healthcare team.

Strategic Planning
Optimal utilization of per diem nursing roles involves detailed strategic planning to ensure that staffing aligns perfectly with care needs. Here's a structured approach to achieving this:
• Demand Forecasting: Effective demand forecasting involves analyzing historical data and current trends to anticipate periods of increased need for nursing care. By accurately predicting these periods, healthcare facilities can proactively adjust staffing levels. This foresight helps in avoiding both understaffing, which can compromise patient care, and overstaffing, which can inflate operational costs. Understanding local events and epidemiological trends are essential components of accurate demand forecasting.

• Skill Matching: Skill matching is crucial in aligning the specialties and competencies of on-demand RNs with the specific needs of residents. This strategy ensures that patients receive the most appropriate care for their conditions, leading to better health outcomes and more efficient use of resources. For example, matching an RN with expertise in wound care to a post-surgical unit not only enhances patient care but also maximizes the nurse’s skills and job satisfaction.

• Feedback Integration: Regularly integrating feedback from both staff and residents is vital in refining staffing strategies. This continuous loop of feedback allows for adjustments in staffing models based on direct insights from those most affected by these decisions. Engaging nurses and patients in the staffing conversation fosters a collaborative environment where practical and innovative solutions can be implemented to address any emerging challenges.

• Technology Utilization: The use of advanced scheduling software and mobile applications plays a significant role in enhancing communication and improving staffing efficiency. These technologies enable real-time updates and adjustments, reducing administrative burden and allowing more focus on patient care. They also facilitate easier swapping and coverage management among nurses, leading to a more adaptable and responsive staffing system.

Utilizing modern technology enhances communication and scheduling efficiency while incorporating feedback from staff and residents helps refine the approach over time. Careful planning and execution ensure that nursing homes can provide high-quality care without unnecessary expenditure on staffing, thereby achieving both operational efficiency and excellent care standards.

An innovative step toward improving the provision of healthcare to the elderly is the inclusion of on-demand long-term care RN positions. By embracing this model, facilities can adeptly navigate the ebb and flow of healthcare demands, ensuring that each resident receives personalized, attentive care even during peak times or unexpected staff shortages. The flexibility and cost-effectiveness of the best per diem nursing roles attract top nursing talent, fostering a dynamic workforce equipped to handle diverse healthcare challenges. As healthcare continues to evolve, the strategic employment of on-demand nursing personnel will be instrumental in maintaining high care standards, supporting permanent staff, and ensuring that nursing homes are well-prepared to meet the needs of their residents now and in the future.

Cottonwood Trail Injured Hiker

On 08/16/2024 at 2:03 PM, Gallatin County dispatch received a 911 call from a pair of hikers, one of which had become injured while hiking the South Cottonwood trail. The pair initially attempted to self-extricate, but determined it was too dangerous and difficult, and requested assistance from Search and Rescue.

Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue (GCSSAR) members from the Valley section responded, along with Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and an ambulance from American Medical Response.

A hasty team with an accompanying paramedic quickly ascended the trail to locate and evaluate the injured hiker.  Once the team made contact, it was determined a one-wheeled litter would be most effective to extricate them.  GCSSAR members successfully assisted the hiker to the trail head using the litter, where they elected to have a friend transport them to follow-up medical care.

Sheriff Dan Springer would like to commend other hikers in the area who were quick to offer assistance, and ultimately help get in touch with 911. Much of our county’s backcountry still has limited to no cell service. Having multiple means of communication and ensuring a trusted person knows your plan and when to expect you back are good ideas for ensuring a safe return home.

The Art of Scent: How to Choose a Fragrance that Reflects Montana’s Spirit

When you hear Montana, do you think of a big sky, rugged mountains, wide-open spaces, and a giant, clear blue sky that goes on forever? I do. And in a word, that spells adventure! Now, when it comes to your cologne, it has to be much more than just anything to smell good. You want it to be a real connection to that one-and-only place: a cologne for the adventurer, the farmer, or any true Montanan. The really good news??  It doesn’t have to break the bank! Now you can get cheap mens fragrances from Dossier!

Understanding the Scents of Montana
The chill, laid-back, grounded vibe of Montana is something that lives throughout the state, and having a cologne that reflects that vibe can be really appealing to Montana folks and Montana lovers. Just think about what it smells like here.

Picture the scent of pine needles on a swirling breeze after you’ve just arrived at the point at the top of the mountain after a long hike, the sweet, damp smell of rain in crazy stormy woods, the musky fragrance of wildflowers blooming in the middle of an overstuffed meadow… These things can actually be bottled up and worn like a cologne. Which means you can smell like Montana when you’re out there doing your thing.

Choosing a Fragrance That Resonates
Having a cologne that smells like Montana’s outdoors isn’t about running up to the counter, grabbing a box off the shelf, and checking out. It means knowing the complex arrangements of notes that blend into the fragrance. Follow this checklist to guide you to the perfect cologne match for the Montana lifestyle:

Embrace Woody Notes
Woody scents are your most noticeable connection to Montana’s forests and mountains. If you find a fragrance that includes cedar, sandalwood, or pine, then you will find one of the best ways to bring Montana’s forests back to the forefront.

Fresh and Crisp Citrus
That fresh and crisp fragrance surrounded by woods is what you are doing every time you go fishing on a cold morning and, later that day, take a hike into the mountains. Bergamot, lemon, and grapefruit are some of the scents that make the citrus family, and when the weather is cold and the air is fresh, a nice citrus smell will fit right in.

Earthy and Aromatic
There is nothing like the mountains or the wide open spaces to ground you. Literally, that unique smell of earth mixed with vetiver and leather fills the air in Montana, and as you smell these rugged soils, you also smell the men they champion every day.

Affordable Fragrance Options

You probably think that a perfume replicating everything Montana has to offer can’ be bought for a cheap price. We beg to differ. Dossier, as a company that offers cheap men’s perfumes, gives you an opportunity to buy amazing fragrances that make you remember Montana without emptying your wallet. We vow to enable the availability of premium-brand scents — the most interesting and lavish ones on the market.

Finding the Right Fragrance for Every Occasion
Living in Montana, your day can take you from the ranch to a night out on the town. Your fragrance should be able to keep up. Here's how to pick the perfect scent for whatever you want to do today.

Daytime Adventures
When you’re outdoors, it’s best to find the perfect scent, remembering that the outdoors needs something mild. Choose something light and fresh, like citrus or herbal notes. They are excellent for the daytime, giving you a light scent that is noticeable but not overwhelming.

Evening Gatherings

When getting ready for an evening out in town, look for something that is a step or two more powerful than what you wear during the day. A rich scent with woody or spicy undertones can make a great impression and help you stay warm on cool Montana nights.

Everyday Wear
Your go-to fragrance should be as versatile as you are. Find something that can go from day to night and match different outfits. A fragrance with fresh and woody notes in one can be the perfect everyday scent for work, dates, or just hanging out.

Personalizing Your Scent
In Montana, you can let your hair down, so why not your fragrance too? If you want to audition two fragrances to become something all your own, lady, we’ve got your back. Select a heavier base note that makes your heart go pitter-pat, and let’s layer some lighter, airy top notes over them that play them up—or play them away—into a blend that becomes all about you.

Embracing Your Fragrance
Montana is a place shaped by the outdoors—the people, the earth, the sky, the water. Nowhere you go has the same view or the same feel. You should smell like it. With formulas to fit whatever you do, you can experience that wild, uncharted Montana roughness wherever you are. Find a formula that works for you, and discover the scents you can’t leave behind.
