Anne Becker is a Utah-based painter whose work is colorful, simplified, and design-driven. She enjoys abstracting shapes from observation or imagination and often uses landscape or still life as her starting point.

Becker moves between two complementary approaches. Some paintings begin with direct observation or photographs; others emerge from instinct and imagination. Even when a work starts with a recognizable subject, she quickly allows it to depart from reality, responding instead to what the painting needs. Color, line, shape, and mark-making become ways to communicate a feeling rather than simply describe appearance.

Her process is exploratory and highly intuitive. A painting may pass through dozens of layers as she adds, obscures, scrapes, sands, and rebuilds its surface. She works in acrylic, oil and cold wax, oil stick, pencil, and collage, using varied tools and materials to create texture and reveal traces of what came before. That accumulated history is not incidental; it is a vital part of the finished work and records the journey of making it.

Although Becker’s paintings often balance representation and abstraction, she does not see the two as opposites. Each strengthens the other. Observation gives her something to hang onto, while abstraction offers the freedom to simplify, exaggerate, and invent. In this process of call and response, she deconstructs and reinterprets familiar forms, then intuitively rebuilds them as the painting evolves.

Becker often hikes and sketches outdoors, studying shapes in the landscape and carrying those impressions to the studio. When weather keeps her indoors, she is happy to turn to still life. Whatever the subject, she enjoys breaking it down, altering it, and putting it together in a new way. Her aim is to create a painting that stands on its own through color, shape, and composition; the subject itself is less important.
