April Cover Artist: John Chart
Tuesday Apr. 1st, 2025
Born and raised in New Jersey and educated in Bozeman, Montana, John Chart began his teaching career in California. Eventually, though, Montana won out—John and his wife, Teresa, are happily retired and living in Helena. John spent 35 years teaching high school math, much of that time dabbling in photography and all things Grateful Dead. His retirement from teaching has afforded him the time to focus on his photography and music.
John is the guitarist in Helena’s Grateful Dead Tribute band, 710 Ashbury. He’s spent his whole life immersed in the Grateful Dead. He once referred to himself as “a bit of a Deadhead,” to which his brother responded; “You’re a BIT of a Deadhead like King Kong was a BIT of a monkey.” Be sure to check out 710 Ashbury… their shows aren’t just good, they’re exactly perfect. As for photography, John was always the guy who liked to “document the trip.” Teresa took notice of his interest, and sprung for a camera for Christmas. It was his Red Ryder BB gun moment—the greatest gift he’s ever received. John hasn’t been able to decide whether to focus on landscape or wildlife photography; so, for now, it’ll have to be both. The most important thing is getting out and taking the camera for a walk.
