Spring Into Sustainability: Energy Efficient Upgrades for your home

As the first signs of green grass emerge, April is the perfect time to give your home an eco-friendly refresh. Making sustainable upgrades does not just help the planet—it can also boost your property value and cut monthly utility costs. Whether you are looking for simple fixes or major changes, here are some smart ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency this season.
Virtual Energy Audits: A Smart First Step: NorthWestern Energy has long provided home energy audits, but now they offer two options; a Home EnergyCheck, either virtually or in person, as well as a Home EnergySurvey. These are both free services, and according to NorthWestern Energy’s website, they can help you understand how energy is being used in your home and where changes could be made to help you save energy and money. Just search online for NorthWestern EnergyCheck or EnergySurvey, or call 800-823-5995 for more information.
Seal the Leaks, Save Big: Air leaks around windows, doors, and other openings can lead to wasted energy. Use caulk, spray foam, and weather stripping to seal gaps and prevent drafts. This small investment not only enhances comfort, it also reduces heating and cooling expenses.
Insulation and Ventilation: A Year-Round Solution: For older homes, adding attic insulation is a cost-effective way to maintain indoor temperatures. Proper ventilation is just as important—ensuring airflow from soffits to ridge vents can help keep your home cool in the summer and prevent ice dams in winter.
Smart Tech for a Greener Home: Installing a programmable or smart thermostat can help regulate temperatures efficiently, automatically adjusting settings when you’re away. Regular HVAC maintenance, including timely filter changes, also ensures optimal performance. Landlords should remember to schedule servicing for rental properties to avoid costly repairs down the line.
Lighting the Way to Energy Savings: LED bulbs are now available in a variety of styles, offering an easy swap that significantly cuts electricity usage. With longer lifespans and lower energy consumption, they’re a simple and effective way to make your home more sustainable.
Solar Power: A Bright Investment: For those ready to make a larger impact, solar panels remain a viable option. Many homeowners recoup their investment in as little as seven years through energy savings, and tax incentives still provide financial benefits. Current federal tax credits allow for a 30% deduction on installations from 2022 through 2032. With loan programs available that align payments with existing energy bills, solar can be an affordable long-term upgrade. Check with your tax advisor for the most up-to-date incentives.
Sustainability Meets Market Growth: Making eco-conscious home improvements doesn’t just help the environment—it can enhance resale value and attract buyers looking for energy-efficient features.
As for the real estate market, home sales remain stable. I’ve attached data for the last six months of single-family home sales in and around Bozeman. In the first two months of this year, 74 homes sold, with an additional 65 currently under contract or pending as of this writing.
The data reflects home sales in the greater Bozeman area, including Four Corners, Gallatin Gateway, Bridger Canyon, and Bozeman city limits. These numbers come from the Big Sky Country MLS and do not include private party sales, condominiums, or townhouses.
Whether you make small adjustments or major upgrades, improving your home’s sustainability is a win-win—saving money, increasing comfort, and contributing to a healthier planet.
