February Cover Artist: Miles Glynn

Sunday Feb. 1st, 2015

Miles Glynn is a photographic artist based in Belgrade, Montana. Growing up an Army brat, Miles traveled often while spending much time following his photojournalist father on assignments and creating black and white prints in the darkroom. His passion for creating compelling images continued into adulthood as his travels more and more often kept him coming out west. The permanent move to Montana five years ago has helped fuel his artistic drive while providing endless inspiration from the land, wildlife, and history which abound here.

Miles’ body of work consists of common subject matter which is presented in compelling and distinctive ways. Of his work, Miles says, “the mark of fine art photography, as opposed to commercial photography or a mere snap shot, is the artist seeing and presenting something which others viewing the same scene did not see. To this end, this is where I take my photos to a different level and present images which often look quite different from what was apparent at the moment of capture. It is my aim to go beyond showing the obvious or merely documenting a scene with technical execution. I wrestle with and manipulate images until I feel they have reached a certain level of artistic expression and have gone far enough beyond the conventions of common nature and western photography.”

Once created, his images are produced on fine art stretched canvas as well as other less common fabric-based textiles which provide a truly unique finished product. Certain images are also finished in encaustic, an ancient practice of coating an image in melted bees wax.

In the short time his images have been shown publicly they have appeared in galleries in Kalispell, Missoula, Scottsdale, AZ, and the iconic Wall Drug of South Dakota. Miles is currently planning for a busy summer of art shows such as Sweet Pea, Livingston Festival of the Arts, and others throughout the northern Rockies.
