Montana State University has announced plans to commission a public art piece for permanent display in the Veteran Support Center on campus. Proposals are now being accepted.

The Veteran Support Center at MSU helps veterans transition from military life to higher education. The center is located in the SUB and provides a space for veterans to connect with their peers, study, relax, receive academic and personal support, and learn about opportunities for veterans at MSU and throughout the community. It opened in fall 2011.

In recognition of the success of the center and its contribution to veterans at MSU, the university seeks public art to be displayed there, according to Brenda York, director of MSU Disability, Re-entry & Veteran Services.

The artwork should make a timeless, humanistic statement on behalf of and in support of all veterans of this and future generations, added Nancy Cornwell, dean of the MSU College of Arts and Architecture.

The commission for the artwork is $3,000. Artists who wish to be considered for the commission must submit application materials, including a project proposal, a portfolio of 20 images of the artist’s work, a resume and a signed copy of the Public Art Procedures document (available at www.msuschoolofart.com). Proposals should be sent in PDF form to art@montana.edu or by mail to Veterans Art Project, The School of Art, 213 Haynes Hall, Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana, 59717.

A panel of art experts, veterans and university administrators will review and score all eligible portfolios received based on use of appropriate materials, responsiveness to the site and artistic excellence.
