The Emerson invites children grades 2-6 to participate in our Multicultural ArtCamps with artist-educators Maggie Carlson and Allison McGree. The affordable camp runs from Monday-Friday, March 12-16 from 9 am – 3 pm. The cost is $135 for Emerson members and $160 for non-members. Students will participate in fun art activities along with outside recreation in a supportive environment with individualized instruction. Art projects include creating imitation Plains Indian parfleches (hide bags) decorated with traditional designs; Japanese rice paper collages; pastel still life studies; abstract paper designs, printmaking projects and wire sculptures.

Allison McGree is a sixth generation Montanan, a graduate of Gonzaga University, a K-12 certified art instructor from MSU Bozeman, and a practicing artist.  McGree has worked with the nonprofit “Art Mobile of Montana” (2008-2011) that brings artwork to audiences of all ages throughout the state and she has also worked as an artist in residence (2005-2012).  Today, McGree is collaborating with Maggie Carlson in a pilot program entitled: Project MArt (more art), that includes teaching affordable multicultural art classes at the Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture and school residencies throughout the state.

Maggie Carlson Yellowtail is a certified art instructor with 20 years of teaching experience. Her primary media is acrylic paint and collage. Carlson Yellowtail holds a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland CA and a Masters degree from Regis University in Denver. She has taught art on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian reservations for the last 18 years. She is now affiliated with Project MArt (More Art) and the Emerson’s Multicultural Art Education program. She has been an artist in residence at the Archie Bray and has taught art through the Montana Arts Council’s Artist- in-Schools program and throughout the state for Indian Education for All.
