There’s a new trend cropping up in cutting edge studios around the country. A new sexy kind of portrait is quietly becoming what one photographer called “the biggest hidden market in the world.” It’s hidden because theses are private, personal images for women and/or their significant other, not images of models for publication. Fun and playful, sexy and sultry. Mothers, grandmothers, professional women, stay at home moms. Women of all sizes, shapes and ages, from every facet of life. For most, it’s a daring new adventure, something that is just about them!

For example, our studio is known for our baby photography. In the last eight years there have been over 600 babies through the Baby Plan, nearly 2500 baby sessions! It has always been the biggest thing to do. Until last year, that is. Last year for the first time, glamour sales, (including boudoir and 1950s style pinup) passed the Baby Plan. This year it will be even bigger.

Three years ago we moved into our new studio. I had more room for props and sets and I started asking my clients when they had done something just for them. The answer was almost always “never!” We offered them a very customizable glamour session that could be black and white “Old Hollywood” style glamour, 50s style pinups, soft boudoir, fine art black and white portraits. It was an instant hit!

Clients have complete control of their session. They can choose the poses, styles, wardrobe, props and backgrounds. Or, they can let me make some or all of those decisions. So far we have done over 400 sessions. The fact that most of our new glamour clients come from referrals means that our clients love the results.

Choosing the right studio is critical. Almost every woman has serious misgivings at first about “starring” in a glamour session. No one is completely happy with her body and for some the idea of being photographed in a sexy style is terrifying. In many cases if it wasn’t for the urging of a significant other, they would never do it. For others it’s a “Bucket list” item, something to push the boundaries of their comfort zone a little bit.  But once they see how comfortable and fun the session is they have a lot of fun and most find a reason to do it again! “Addicting” is a common phrase used to describe the experience.

I truly believe that every woman is beautiful and sexy. I’ve worked hard to develop the ability to see that in each client and to learn the advanced lighting and posing techniques to make each women look amazing. But what have the results been?
