Workshop: Drawing Sound — Experimental Musical Art with Marla Goodman

Artist and musician Marla Goodman invites participants to explore different ways to transform sound into imagery and back again. Using one of the world’s rarest and most fascinating electronic instruments, the Theremin, Goodman will illustrate the connection between lines drawn on paper and sounds “drawn” in the air. Participants will have the chance to create and interpret their own visual soundscape collages using provided art materials, taking turns playing the Theremin, and experimenting with the Virtual ANS Synthesizer (which makes drawings into sound). The workshop culminates with a multimedia art performance where participants respond to what they see and hear, a common improvisation technique in jazz and other genres. No musical or art experience is required. After the workshop commences, the public is free and welcome to enjoy a performance by Marla and the workshop attendees.
