Virtual Geosites: A New Way to Experience the Geology of Montana

“From the dinosaur-riddled badlands of the east to the structurally tortured mountains of the west, Montana’s geology spans ~3.5 billion years of earth history. The stunning geodiversity is challenging to encapsulate, visualize, and comprehend via traditional means. Certainly, the best way to experience these places is in person, however, due to a myriad of reasons, we can’t all visit these far-flung places. Here, I employ 360-degree video to create short, ~5-minute vignettes to bring stunning Montana Geosites to you. For context, I will position each Geosites into a larger interpretive geo-narrative for the state. Eventually, this project will comprise 41 Geosites for the 41st state. I invite you to join me in this adventure. During my non-traditional presentation, you will immerse yourself in a number of these sites.” – Dr. Steve Quane, Director of the Mineral Museum at Montana Tech and Director of Outreach for the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology
For the most immersive experience, participants are encouraged to bring their mobile phones, laptop computers or virtual reality headsets and a pair of headphones to the presentation.
