A Bold Vision for a New National Monument near Big Sky

On Thursday, October 3 at 5:00 PM the Big Sky Community Library, Stephen Capra, Executive Director of Bold Visions Conservation, will present a plan for a new National Monument near Big Sky, Montana. The Madison Gallatin Wildlife National Monument will protect 1.6 million acres in Montana’s Madison and Gallatin mountain ranges and in Island Park area, Idaho.

“This much-needed National Monument will be the first of its kind” said Capra. “It will prioritize protection of wildlife in this critical part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.” The new monument could be declared by President Biden under the Antiquities Act.

In the Madison Range near Big Sky, wildlife like wolves, bears and mountain lions would be protected from hunting and trapping.

Phil Knight of Bold Visions added “The Monument will also prioritize wilderness management of roadless lands including the Porcupine and Buffalo Horn areas and the Gallatin Crest.” The US Forest Service would still be the managing agency and private land would not be affected.

Knight added “The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem’s unique and imperiled wildlife need this additional layer of protection for their long term survival.”

The Madison Gallatin Wildlife National Monument is endorsed by the Rocky Mountain Tribal Council.

The Big Sky Community Library is located at 45465 Gallatin Road in Big Sky.  This event is free and open to the public.
