Free Beginner Ukulele Lessons & Jam
This is a free group lesson and jam session held every second and fourth Saturday at Gallatin Valley Mall east foyer (old Penny’s entrance) from 11AM to 2PM. Feel free to come and go to only those parts of this event that you have an interest in.
• 11AM-12PM - First time and beginner players will learn how to tune your ukulele; how to play a few basic cords; how to hold and strum your ukulele. If you don’t have a uke yet don’t buy one! There will be a limited number of ukuleles available for folks to try out and possibly even borrow temporarily until you find one right for you. We will be happy to offer some advice, and can point you towards some known good ukes. Beginners will expand their basic chord vocabulary and strumming patterns with various chord progressions exercises and 3- and 4-chord songs in a few basic keys. Just like when learning a new language words are not enough, you need to learn a little grammar. Here you will learn a little basic music theory to help you stay oriented on your musical journey.
• 12PM-1PM – This will be a guided jam session. Music will be projected up on the wall, songs will be picked by the jam session leader. We will begin with easy songs and work gently over the course of the hour towards more difficult songs but will remain within the beginner realm. If you miss a chord or can’t play a song, worry not! No judgment here, we’ve all been there, just pick up when you can. This will be your opportunity to know where you need to improve, and as you do experience the great joy of playing music and singing with others. Let’s make the mall a magical sounding place!
• 1PM-2PM – Open play-along, campfire rules! Bring a tune for all to play and we’ll project it up on the wall for all to see, or play a tune solo for others to enjoy. We’ll sit in a big semi-circle and go in order. If you just want to play along, sit one row back.
