Virtual: Discover the Nuumu Poyo (John Muir Trail)
Our REI team of experts are excited to share their experience hiking the Nuumu Poyo, also known as the John Muir Trail. Starting in Yosemite National Park and ending on Mt. Whitney, the trail stretches 211 miles through mountain valleys and passes. Whether you are planning a trip of a lifetime or just getting started in long distance backpacking, this class will give you the skills needed to plan for a thru-hike of this iconic landscape. We will go over required permits, food resupply strategies, gear, daily mileage, trail life and all the physical and mental preparation needed for a successful long distance hike. In the past, the Nuumu Poyo was used as a trade route for many Native American tribes including the Paiute, Ahwahnechee, Miwok and Mono peoples. Trade routes could be found throughout the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, with the Nuumu Poyo being one of the most extensive trails. Read more about the Nuumu Poyo's history and meaning below.
