Pop’s Garage By Coco Costigan Closing

Jessie Wilber Gallery
August 13 – September 3, 2021

The Exhibit

Coco Costigan is a sculptor and potter, working primarily in clay since the early 90’s. She has worked and lived in Long Beach, Santa Monica, and Malibu, California, relocating to Bozeman in 2019. Inspired by her mother’s family history, she is steeping herself in her heritage with a focus on her family background dating back to the 1890’s in Butte and Livingston Montana.

Inspiration for this show comes from the heirlooms, artifacts, and vintage goods unearthed from her “Pop’s Garage.” These relics are created out of clay to share stories from her past and of her family. They create a space for the audience to relate to and reflect upon a bygone era and their own memories held dormant by time.

Coco deeply appreciates the continued function of objects from our past. The scuffs, dents, dings, and discolorations reveal the experiences of each piece. These imperfections become meaningful moments and, enhancing the objects beauty reminiscent of the lines on one’s face, speaking to a long journey and the plentiful wisdom. It is fascinating, knowing that the person who used each object, most likely used it often, creating many memories.

All exhibits are free and open the public.  Masks and social distance are required in the Gallery.  Thank you for your consideration of the Emerson community.
