Join us for an online lecture by local artist Stella Nall: a First Descendant of the Crow Tribe, her work discusses topics central to Indigenous identity today, her experiences with current Tribal enrollment policies as a mixed race woman, and how she incorporates tradition into her work as a contemporary artist. 

Stella Nall grew up in Bozeman, and is now a full time artist currently working out of Missoula, where she graduated from the University of Montana in 2020 with a BFA in printmaking, a BA in psychology and a minor in Art History and Criticism. She is a mixed race Indigenous woman, and a First Descendant of the Crow Tribe. Her work has been featured in Cutbank Literary Magazine, Scribendi Literature and Arts Magazine, and will be featured on the cover of the upcoming publication of Poetry Northwest . She is currently an exhibiting artist with the Art Mobile of Montana, and was the 2020 recipient of the Western Regional Honors Council Award for Visual Art. Her art lives in numerous public and private collections, including The Montana Museum of Art and Culture, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

Artist Statement from Ms. Nall:
I value aesthetics, critical thought and concept in my work, but above all I seek connection. Connection to others, to the earth, to my own identity and the history of my ancestors. Some of the imagery that I use is drawn from tradition, and some I developed to speak to my own experiences. Through my work, I hope to bring awareness to the issues that have shaped my identity, and continue to shape the future of Indigenous communities across the United States and Canada.
