Opening Reception for Jessie Close
Altitude Gallery will be showing whimsical drawings by local writer, artist and advocate Jessie Close during the August Art Walk. Jessie has been drawing her whole life because it makes her laugh. She starts with a linespiration – a simple line drawn on the page - then allows her imagination to play as she adds in fanciful and often humorous characters and scenes. Each tiny drawing is rendered in simple black pen on white paper in a minimalist folk art style.
Art and advocacy often live side by side. Jessie and her son, artist Calen Pick, have traveled extensively to speak about mental illness. Their advocacy began when her sister Glenn Close co-founded Bring Change to Mind in 2009. Bring Change to Mind is a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging dialogue about mental health, and to raising awareness, understanding, and empathy for this issue which affects approximately 1 in 4 adults in any given year. Altitude will be donating 5% of the proceeds from the sale of work in this show to Bring Change to Mind.
Jessie will bring her pens and paper to the August 11th Art Walk from 6-8pm. She will doodle something tiny for you, something that will make you smile!
