Natural sound is an ever-present, though sometimes under-noticed, component of our lives. Sound reveals a sense of time and place and can powerfully inform our own connection to a community. But like our landscapes, our soundscapes are changing. Climate change, habitat loss, and increasing anthropogenic noise can alter or mask the rich acoustic environments around us. These kinds of alterations to our soundscapes make it especially important for us to keep listening—not only to the world around us, but to each other as well. Spend the evening engaged in deep listening to the species, soundscapes, and stories of America’s first national park by experiencing an aural tapestry of field recordings, interviews, and other bites of sound from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. We’ll leave plenty of time for questions and thoughtful discussion after our group listening event. Jennifer Jerrett is a science editor, nature recordist, and award-winning radio producer for Telemetry, the science podcast for Yellowstone National Park and the Acoustic Atlas at Montana State University. Her work focuses on experiential storytelling through sound. Weaving high-fidelity field recordings with public radio-style reporting, Jerrett documents species and soundscapes of the region and creates sound-rich pieces that go behind the scenes to spotlight science and issues in America's first national park.
