Science on Screen- Whale Rider

BFS presents family favorite, Whale Rider, as our final 2017 Science on Screen (SoS) film. A story of love, rejection and triumph as a young Maori girl fights to fulfill a destiny her grandfather refuses to recognize. The film features an unforgettable performance by 11-year old Keisha Castle-Hughes, set against a backdrop of the boundless New Zealand landscape and tantalizing ocean photography. A beautiful illustration of the power of myths to adapt — Whale Rider is a mystical, gentle movie that goes beyond the boundaries of the usual coming-of-age film. Guest speakers Gianna Savoie, an environmental biologist, filmmaker and Executive Director of Ocean Media Institute, along with MSU Professor Dr. Michael Reidy, whose historical research interests include science and technology, mountaineering, and oceans, will open the evening with Waves of Change: Myth, History, and Culture in Ocean Science, a lively introduction geared towards all ages. Science on Screen® is underwritten by a generous grant from the Coolidge Corner Foundation and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. This is the second season Bozeman Film Society has produced this pioneering, nationwide program.
