Bozeman's Night of the Grizzly

Join Mountain Journal for an evening with famous grizzly bear attack survivor Barrie Gilbert who will talk about his new book One of Us: A Biologist's Walk Among Bears and his evolution as a wildlife advocate. Come early and get expert instruction on how to safely and effectively use bear spray during a free outdoor demonstration. This hands-on workshop is conducted by Danielle Oyler, education coordinator for the Montana Bear Education Working Group. She will also join Gilbert for Q&A, including whether bear spray could have made a difference in repelling the bear that attacked Barrie. Barrie’s book illuminates how his fascination with grizzly bears almost got him killed 30 years ago and tracks his life’s work protecting and advocating for their survival. After spending thousands of hours among wild grizzlies in Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Katmai national parks, Alberta, and coastal British Columbia, according to his website, “His research has centered on how bears respond to people and each other, with a focus on how to keep humans and bears safe.” The Montana Bear Education Group has equally worked trying to teach people how to reduce grizzly bear encounters and stay safe in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. During Danielle’s workshop, a remote-controlled grizzly bear cut-out moves at 25 miles per hour (considerably slower than an actual charging bear) while participants employ simulated bear spray to learn how to best protect themselves in the event of a real encounter.
