Frankenstein, Inc. is written and directed by Marc Beaudin.
Set in present day America, Frankenstein, Inc. is a retelling of Mary Shelly’s classic horror story of a man driven to destruction by his relentless belief in the saving omnipotence of science and technology. This new monster brings genetic engineering, distrust of natural systems, and ecological arrogance to a modern and frightening reality.
Victor Frankenstein is a brilliant young scientist who’s just taken a research position at Corporation X, a world leader in biological modification technologies. His philosophy and passion are summed up in the promise he makes to his mother:
“Nature is cruel and inept. She made us weak and blind and ephemeral like some damn insect. But science will fix that. We weren’t meant for these short, meaningless lives of suffering. We should be gods. Free from sickness and death. Immortal. This is why we have minds, an intellect; why we invented science. Only science can free us from the prison of nature, and I promise you Mother, that I will be the one to find the way.”
His ambition soon leads him to great success at Corporation X: He becomes the majority stock holder and president of the board. Eventually, Corporation X becomes a subsidy of his own company, Frankenstein, Inc. As his wealth and power continue to rise; the rest of his life, as well as his sanity, are eroded: He drives away his fiancée Elizabeth and his best friend Henry Clerval, fires his mentor Dr. Waldham, and blindly, fanatically pushes science to a monstrous and deadly climax. In the words of The Monster:
“The one thing I desire is to be a part of Nature and that is the one thing you created me not to be. I should have been a strand in the web, but you made me a cog in the wheel and this wheel is set to grind all of humanity into a vast, unmarked grave.”
New take on ‘Frankenstein’ superbly, hauntingly chilling … Beaudin’s script is a worthy adaptation, wasting no words and written with the soul of a poet as it questions the power of today’s science and stockholders. … The opening scene is one of the best things we’ve ever seen in theatre.” –Janet Martineau, The Saginaw News
